Brockton community leaders support early literacy development at BDN

Brockton, Mass – Leaders of the local business and educational community joined Brockton Day Nursery for a morning of literacy on Wednesday, February 19. The bi-annual BDN Reads program paired community leaders with one of Brockton Day Nursery’s sixteen classrooms, where guest read a book to the students and took part in morning activities.

“We were very pleased to have so many great community leaders join us for BDN Reads. Having guest adult readers from the community truly drives home the importance of reading at all ages. Language and literacy are a large part of our curriculum which is why we partner with organizations such as Raising a Reader and Jumpstart,” said Executive Director, Vanessa Leite.

“A child’s reading skills are important to their success in school and work. In addition, reading can be a fun and imaginative activity for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them. As children develop in their formative years, reading and writing are important for the development of language to communicate. This event was a large success and we truly look forward to running our next BDN Reads program in the fall,” said Leite.

Special guest readers included: Ms. Kathleen Smith, Superintendent of the Brockton Public Schools; Dr. Charles Wall, President of Massasoit Community College; Ms. Shaynah Barnes, City Councilor- at- Large; Emily Harriman of Crescent Credit Union; Nick McCummings of Harrington Insurance Agency, Inc.; Katie Kelley of the Community Bank; Marc Lucas of Nstar; Eric Lutz, President of the Brockton Area Rotary Club; Representative Claire Cronin; Kim Hollon, President of Brockton Signature Health; George Spilios of Crown Linen Service, Mark Linde of Brockton Community Access, Terri Linde, Jonathan Pierce of Avon Cooperative Bank, Susan Fernandez of Eastern Bank, Yashin Cerritos of Mutual Bank, and lastly Mayor Bill Carpenter and Noube Rateau.

Also present were Brockton Day Nursery board members Craig Harsfield, President; Linda Milne, Clerk and Jessica Wainwright, Esq. who came to show support for BDN Reads.
