STEM at Work

Brockton, Mass –Brockton Day Nursery’s Before and After school students have been thoroughly satisfied with the newly implemented STEM enrichment program. In recent weeks students have learned the important design aspects of bridges as they constructed bridges with toothpicks and marshmallows, and pipe cleaners.  Students also worked on an egg drop experiment where they had to design and build a system that would protect an egg from a 3.3 feet drop and have begun exploring the 5 senses.
Children in the STEM Enrichment program will learn real world applications of science and math and build background knowledge on the STEM field.  The ultimate goal is increasing their science and math achievement while also encouraging further exploration of STEM careers.  The program is offered four days a week and is taught by grade level.

Brockton, Mass –Brockton Day Nursery was recently awarded $20,000 to implement a STEM Enrichment Program within its existing After School Academic Program (ASAP).   Funding was provided by The Department of Elementary & Secondary Education through the Quality Enhancements in After-School and Out-of-School Time (ASOST-Q) Grant Program.  The goal of the STEM Enrichment Program is to foster student interest in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The program will be developed under the guidance of STEM consultant, Rickie Thompson, a retired math teacher and MCAS coach, who will insure all activities supplement Brockton Public School’s science and math curriculum. “I am really excited about the program because we could be developing scientists, Computer Technologist, or aviators. I look forward to possibly jumpstarting some careers,” said Benita Smith, Assistant Director.

The program will teach real world applications of science and math, set academic expectations, build background knowledge, and motivate students with the ultimate goal of increasing their science and math achievement.  The program will be offered four days a week to our students and will be taught by grade level.
