Brockton Day Nursery to Celebrate 120th Anniversary
Brockton, MA – Brockton Day Nursery will be celebrating its 120th anniversary on Friday, September, 19th. Brockton Native, Kenneth R. Feinberg will be the evening’s keynote speaker while the Wainwright Service Award will be presented to Cheryl Opper, Founder of School on Wheels, and the BDN Alumni Excellence Award will be presented to Dr. Shawn Boone, Alumni of Brockton Day Nursery and Educator for the Los Angeles Unified School District. The event will be hosted by Mistress of Ceremonies, Danielle Vollmar, StormTeam 5 meteorologist for WCVB Boston.
In addition to these special presentations, the event, which will be held at the Massasoit Conference Center beginning at 6:00 p.m., will also include a cocktail reception, dinner, entertainment and dancing. Tickets for the event are available to the general public at $75 per person or $120 per pair by contacting Brittanie Hansbury at [email protected] or 508-588-2700. Table sales, advertisement and sponsorships are also available.
The Wainwright Service Award was developed by Brockton Day Nursery to honor persons who are making significant contributions to young children in the Greater Brockton community through their time, actions, talents and dedication (outside any volunteer work done for their employer). The award was named in recognition of Attorney William M. Wainwright, long time Board of Director and Volunteer at Brockton Day Nursery. During his time on the board, Bill was instrumental in the molding and shaping of the organization and its future.
Historical research on the 120 year history was done by local historian Jim Benson along with BDN’s Research Intern, Susan Daiute. The research was put into biography form and will be included in the Gala Magazine that will be distributed to all attendees. A documentary, produced by Brockton Community Access, will also be presented at the Gala.
“We are absolutely thrilled to have our entire 120 year history of serving the children of the city in written form,” says Vanessa Leite, Executive Director. “We were the first nursery and care provider in Brockton and the second nursery organized in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and have impacted the lives of over 10,000 students during that time. It is a great feeling knowing we are able to continue our tradition of providing Great Beginnings and Bright Futures to the children of the Greater Brockton area.”
Brockton Day Nursery, a non-profit organization established in 1894, is one of the largest early education and child care providers in the city. The agency serves the needs of families and children by providing comprehensive child care and support services from birth to 13 years of age.
