Open Registration for Free Computer Literacy Class

Brockton, Mass – Brockton Day Nursery and Catholic Charities South have partnered to offer a free Computer Literacy Program at Catholic Charities South located at 169 Court Street in Brockton.  The Five Week Program will begin on Thursday, October 16th from 6 to 9PM and will cover basic computer functions including Microsoft word, excel, and use of the internet for research.    The classes are being offered through funding from the United Way of Greater Plymouth County to promote computer literacy in the Greater Brockton area.

Brockton Day Nursery 120th Anniversary Gala Success

Brockton, Mass- Friday evening, September 19th at the Massasoit Conference Center, there were speakers and testimonials, hundreds of business and community leaders and cultural entertainers galore gathered to celebrate the strength and accomplishments of Brockton Day Nursery as the organization turned 120 years old.

Brockton Day Nursery hosted this gala as part of its 120th Anniversary celebration.  The impressive list of local elected officials included Representative Michael Brady, Mayor Bill Carpenter, Michelle Dubois, Matthew McDonough, and Scott Vecchi.  Major supporters of the gala that were present  for the historical evening were Massasoit Community College, Mutual Bank, Signature Healthcare, Rockland Trust, WB Mason, Sullivan Tire, Brockton Housing Authority, and Crescent Credit Union. "It was a great feeling to be able to celebrate such a historic event with 200+ people. Particularly those staff members, alumni and community partners that were able to join us. I am especially grateful to all those who spent the time to make the evening such a success" stated Board President, Craig Harsfield.  Brockton Day Nursery’s staff and board of directors are extremely grateful and humbled by the outpouring of support for our historic celebration. In highlighting accomplishments Brockton Day Nursery presented the 2014 Wainwright Service Award and the 2014 BDN Alumni Excellence Award to:

Cheryl Opper, School on Wheels:  Received the 2014 Wainwright Service Award.  An award created in the memory of Attorney William M. Wainwright who was instrumental in shaping the lives of children in the Brockton area through early education and care.   With a fresh college degree in her hands and a font of inspiration, Cheryl began her journey to realize her passion for helping children.  After working a variety of jobs, she started the School on Wheels of Massachusetts, a program to support the academic achievement of homeless children with after-school tutoring, needed school supplies, and educational assistance for families.

Dr. Shawn Boone, Los Angeles Unified School District:   Received the 2014 BDN Alumni Excellence Award.   An award created to honor alumnus of Brockton Day Nursery who have made great strides in life despite their circumstances.  This award was newly created to showcase that Great Beginnings in early education and care do lead to Bright Futures.    Shawn is now a leader in the field of education, receiving many awards and accolades including Teacher of the Year, Los Angeles Unified School District in May 2013 and Faculty Member of the Year, University of Phoenix, Southern California, College of Education in November 2012.

Proceeds from the event will enable Brockton Day Nursery to not only continue its mission which is to serve the needs of families and children by providing comprehensive early education, care and support services but to also continue the development of a growth project (renovation and expansion), which will enable the program to provide for additional children and families. 

Representative Michael Brady offered praise:  On behalf of , it is my honor to extend warm greetings and congratulations to the Brockton Day Nursery in recognition of your 120 years of service to the community.

Keynote Speaker, Attorney Kenneth Feinberg commended the event:   Brockton Day Nursery is an important part of the very history of Brockton.   This evening as we celebrate its 120th Anniversary it is more relevant today than ever before.    I congratulate all those who have helped the nursery play such a critical role in the lives of so many.  

Brockton Day Nursery student’s, provided a dance performance of exceptional beauty and precision along with heartwarming vocal and skit performances.   The Brockton Symphony Orchestra quartet greeted guest with an elegant sound as you entered the gala, and the Big Party Orchestra, performing seamlessly throughout, closed out the evening with their unique style.

Brockton Day Nursery to Celebrate 120th Anniversary      

Brockton, MA – Brockton Day Nursery will be celebrating its 120th anniversary on Friday, September, 19th.  Brockton Native, Kenneth R. Feinberg will be the evening’s keynote speaker while the Wainwright Service Award will be presented to Cheryl Opper, Founder of School on Wheels, and the BDN Alumni Excellence Award will be presented to Dr. Shawn Boone, Alumni of Brockton Day Nursery and Educator for the Los Angeles Unified School District.   The event will be hosted by Mistress of Ceremonies, Danielle Vollmar, StormTeam 5 meteorologist for WCVB Boston.  

In addition to these special presentations, the event, which will be held at the Massasoit Conference Center beginning at 6:00 p.m., will also include a cocktail reception,  dinner, entertainment and dancing. The Wainwright Service Award was developed by Brockton Day Nursery to honor persons who are making significant contributions to young children in the Greater Brockton community through their time, actions, talents and dedication (outside any volunteer work done for their employer).  The award was named in recognition of Attorney William M. Wainwright, long time Board of Director and Volunteer at Brockton Day Nursery. During his time on the board, Bill was instrumental in the molding and shaping of the organization and its future.

Historical research on the 120 year history was done by local historian Jim Benson along with BDN’s Research Intern, Susan Daiute.   The research was put into biography form and will be included in the Gala Magazine that will be distributed to all attendees.    A documentary, produced by Brockton Community Access, will also be presented at the Gala. 

“We are absolutely thrilled to have our entire 120 year history of serving the children of the city in written form,” says Vanessa Leite, Executive Director.  “We were the first nursery and care provider in Brockton and the second nursery organized in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and have impacted the lives of over 10,000 students during that time.  It is a great feeling knowing we are able to continue our tradition of providing Great Beginnings and Bright Futures to the children of the Greater Brockton area.”

Brockton Day Nursery’s Alumni BBQ

Brockton, Mass – On Friday, August 8, 2014 Brockton Day Nursery hosted an Alumni Barbeque in celebration of providing comprehensive child care and support services to thousands of children in the Greater Brockton Area. The event was free to all current and past students and staff members. 

Alumni and staff dating back to the 1970’s were invited to partake in an afternoon of food, drinks, games, and dancing. With over 300 alumni in attendance, during course of the afternoon, it was a great and memorable event.  Brockton Day Nursery looks forward to hosting Alumni barbeques annually.

Annual fundraiser grosses over $38,000 for early education programs

Brockton, Mass – Brockton Day Nursery held their 8th Annual Mardi Gras Madness Fundraiser on Saturday, March 8 at the Shaw’s Center in Brockton. This year’s major sponsors included: Avon Co-operative Bank (French Quarter Sponsor), Eastern Bank (Bourbon Street Sponsor), The Shaw’s Center (Bourbon Street Sponsor), WXBR (Bourbon Street Sponsor), The Enterprise (Bourbon Street Sponsor), Mutual Bank (Purple, Gold, and Green Sponsor), Comeau & Kelly Construction (Purple, Gold, and Green Sponsor), Partner’s Benefit Group, Inc. Brockton, Mass – Brockton Day Nursery and Catholic Charities’ beginner computer literacy course graduated its fifth class on Thursday, February 20.  The course ran for four weeks and covered topics such as Microsoft word, excel, and internet usage. Generous funding from the United Way of Greater Plymouth County enables BDN to provide the community with this course, which aims to promote computer literacy in the Greater Brockton area. More beginner computer literacy courses will be added in the coming months.

Brockton community leaders support early literacy development at BDN

Brockton, Mass – Leaders of the local business and educational community joined Brockton Day Nursery for a morning of literacy on Wednesday, February 19. The bi-annual BDN Reads program paired community leaders with one of Brockton Day Nursery’s sixteen classrooms, where guest read a book to the students and took part in morning activities.

“We were very pleased to have so many great community leaders join us for BDN Reads. Having guest adult readers from the community truly drives home the importance of reading at all ages. Language and literacy are a large part of our curriculum which is why we partner with organizations such as Raising a Reader and Jumpstart,” said Executive Director, Vanessa Leite.

“A child’s reading skills are important to their success in school and work. In addition, reading can be a fun and imaginative activity for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them. As children develop in their formative years, reading and writing are important for the development of language to communicate. This event was a large success and we truly look forward to running our next BDN Reads program in the fall,” said Leite.  

Special guest readers included: Ms. Kathleen Smith, Superintendent of the Brockton Public Schools; Dr. Charles Wall, President of Massasoit Community College; Ms. Shaynah Barnes, City Councilor- at- Large; Emily Harriman of Crescent Credit Union; Nick McCummings of Harrington Insurance Agency, Inc.; Katie Kelley of the Community Bank; Marc Lucas of Nstar; Eric Lutz, President of the Brockton Area Rotary Club; Representative Claire Cronin; Kim Hollon, President of Brockton Signature Health; George Spilios of Crown Linen Service, Mark Linde of Brockton Community Access, Terri Linde, Jonathan Pierce of Avon Cooperative Bank, Susan Fernandez of Eastern Bank, Yashin Cerritos of Mutual Bank, and lastly Mayor Bill Carpenter and Noube Rateau.

Also present were Brockton Day Nursery board members Craig Harsfield, President; Linda Milne, Clerk and Jessica Wainwright, Esq. who came to show support for BDN Reads.

Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation Gift Supports Teacher Education Assistance at Brockton Day Nursery

Brockton, Mass – The Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation has donated $15,000 to Brockton Day Nursery to support the new education requirements for teachers at the nonprofit early education and care program. Through this funding, BDN is able to offer financial support to our forty-four educators and substitute teachers who are continuing their education. 

“Eastern Bank is proud to support the Brockton Day Nursery,” said Suzanne Fernandes, Vice President and Branch Manager of Eastern Bank, 1265 Belmont Street. “We work to ensure that all our neighbors have equal access to employment, education, healthcare, housing, childcare, healthy meals and other essential support services.

“Based on Brockton Day Nursery’s 119 year history of providing early education, enrichment, social service and care to the families of Greater Brockton, we felt that providing funding for educator professional growth and development was a natural fit

 “As of 2013, BDN requires that all educators must be working on continuing their education for a minimum of six credits per fiscal year, said Vanessa Leite, Executive Director of Brockton Day Nursery. We have committed to providing funding for 63 credits per educator while they are employed at BDN if they are maintaining at least six credits per fiscal year. By strengthening the skills of our educators, BDN is able to fulfill its mission to enhance the quality of education that students from the Greater Brockton area ages 4 weeks to 13 years are receiving.”

BDN will enhance their Teachers’ Continued Education Program through partnerships with Bridgewater State University, Brockton Public Schools, Massasoit Community College, Fisher College Brockton Campus and Eastern Nazarene College.

Purchase Tickets for the 8th Annual Mardi Gras Madness

Brockton, Mass – Tickets for Brockton Day Nursery’s 8th Annual Mardi Gras Madness are on sale. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, March 8 at 7 p.m. at the Shaw’s Center located at 1 Feinberg Way in Brockton. Proceeds from this event will be used to support BDN’s afterschool, before school and early education programs.

Tickets for this adult only event are $50 per person, $80 per couple (must purchase two tickets) or $450 for a Corporate Table of 10.
